According to the Associated Press, ICANN or Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, are in deliberations for 70 days concerning the third proposal since 2000 to initial a .xxx top level internet domain extension.
The .xxx domain would be exclusive to pornographic and adult web sites and could give organizations and parents alike a very easy way to help control access to these sites. (See my post “.xxx Domain for Pornographic Websites”)
Opponents believe that without regulation the .xxx domain would be useless, as it comes at a premium cost and there is no way to enforce its use or force existing pornographic websites to move. There are also allowances for existing sites to keep their existing .com domains for their storefronts giving people just another way to find the adult content.
There is no question that there are a lot of complex issues that need to be sorted out. I believe that the .xxx domain is an excellent idea and should be implemented as just another domain. Until there is regulation and enforcement in place it can only be that, just another domain.
