Attack Computer Wiz

A Security & Technology Weblog

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers or ICANN, will once again review a proposal to offer a .xxx top level domain for adult related webistes. The idea is that any audult related or pornographic website would move their site to the new .xxx.

At face value this sounds like a great idea. As a systems administrator my firewall rule would be "ANY to *.xxx/* = Deny". But it is not that simple.

Part of the problem, as I see it, is that ICANN wants to offer these domains at a premium of $60. This is a huge increase over the current $6 to $9 that you can buy a .com or .net domain for today.

Another issue would be enforcement. Without a penalty and means to enforce a penalty, why would any company move their current doamin to the new premium .xxx domain.

There is of course the issue of censorship, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, you know, constitution stuff.

It would be nice to be able to just block an entire top level domain and catch it all though.
